When you are looking around for a good day care make sure you are able to stay for a good visit to get a ‘feel’ for the place. Do the children all seem happy and occupied? Does the staff seem to treat them appropriately? As you walk around take note of safety factors. If there is water play set up, is there extra close supervision? Is the day care fully fenced, and the kitchen area shut off? Are any electrical outlets covered safely? Look for open spaces and a clear view of sleeping and changing areas.
Ask to see a copy of the daycares policies. What sort of records do they keep for each child? Is staff screening adequate? What is the turn-over of staff like?
If you should notice any unexplained bruising, or any other injury, on your child investigate until you have a satisfactory answer, even if that means eventually taking out a lawsuit. Keep eyes out for any changes in your child’s personality too, especially becoming more aggressive, withdrawn, or developing fears. Though all these things can be perfectly normal in young children very occasionally there may be something more sinister going on. Physical, sexual and emotional abuse unfortunately all possibilities.
You child’s day care experience should be of the highest quality. Do not hesitate to ask for legal advice if your child suffers any injury that seems beyond ‘normal’.
